Right now the so called Olympic Torch is passing through my town in Cheshire. The roads are being closed for a period of up to 3 hours and this has caused havoc for those people trying to get to work. My next door neighbour had a choice, leave 2 hours early for work or arrive 3 hours late. The route to his job is the route of the procession. My wife arrived an hour early for work today because she left early to avoid the procession. There was a lot more traffic on the road due to the volume of traffic.
So this is story of additional hidden costs of holding the Olympics, both in terms of human productivity and impacts on the environment.
Whilst I am on the subject, what about the torch itself?
It is not just one torch, it is hundreds. And people are profiteering by selling their one at a huge profit on ebay.
